oops I just notice I'd had this in draft form this whole time.... oh well, better late than never. ;P
1. Are there geographic hotspots assiciated with this discipline/field. e.g. Glass Blowing and Pacific Northwest.
Sculpture is one of the first art disciplines to emerge in history, because of this is has been around for most of man's history and has become prevalent in every corner of the globe. It seems like there's a lot going on in Australia though.
2. What are the top schools in this field?
- Virginia Commonwealth University Richmond, VA
- Yale University New Haven, CT
- Rhode Island School of Design Providence, RI
- School of the Art Institute of Chicago Chicago, IL
- Cranbrook Academy of Art Bloomfield Hills, MI
- University of California--Los Angeles Los Angeles, CA
- Maryland Institute College of Art Baltimore, MD
3. Who are the important critics in thei field? Who am I expected to know about? Are there critics?
Found some articles about current sculptures by David Bonetti (St. Louis Post-Dispatch), Sheila Farr (Time Magazine)¸ ARTINFO, artcritical,(websites), There doesn't seem to be any critics really relating to ONLY sculpture (that I was able to find). It seems that most are inter-disciplinary.
4. Are there curators? People who organize this type of work? (sculpture department brought curator in on Thursday)
Dr. Velerie Fletsher (Hirshorn), Ann Temkin (MoMA), Elise S. Haas (SFMOMA) are curators for the big museums.
5. What signifies success in the field?
What signifies success in any art field? Sculpture specifically adds the third dimension though, so a successful sculpture should present different perspectives on the artwork from different angles. The artwork should have a different feel from a different angle; it should not be able to be fully appreciated from any single angle.
6. Are there recent book/ideas/issues hot topic ideas that people are currently talking about in this field?
Conceptual sculpture is very popular right now, and very controversial. The fact that greek sculptures were most likely painted in vivid colors has also been creating a bit of a stir in the Art History world. It's also become very popular recently to branch out into using a variety of different media in sculpture.
7. Are there legendary figures in the field that anybody who associates himself with the field HAS to know about. Michaelangelo, Donatello, Bernini, Auguste Rodin, Brancusi...
8. Are there institutions that support the discipline. Residency program specific to this practice? Grants? Prizes? How are artists supported in this field.
Henry Moor Foundation, Jerwood Sculpture Prize, Sculptor's Guild, National Sculpture Society, Washington Sculptor's group, Praemium Imperiale ( arts prize awarded since 1989 by the imperial family of Japan on behalf of the Japan Art Association in the fields painting, sculpture, architecture, music, and theatre/film.), Clifford Chance Sculpture Award (annual award of £3,000 given to a graduating Masters student from the University of the Arts London.), International Sculpture Center( presents a Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award), Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award( Australia's most financially rewarding prize for sculpture)
